Contemporary Kantha
Kanthas are heavily hand stitched domestic cloths made mostly by women and used in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Langka. They were very symbolic in their nature and typically have close stitching. Running stitch is the most commonly used stitch although many decorative stitches are used as well. There is a range of contemporary things we can do with kantha – stitching into painted cloth, leaf printing, transfer printing of leaves. There will also be a demonstration of the construction of different textures of cloth into a whole work. For those who like the traditional there will also be the opportunity to do kantha based on floral decorative patterns in old, treasured embroidery books.
